Good morning L.I.G.H.T. Families!
As promised, I will be letting you know about each of the Gathering Extenders for the month. Spending some time with each of these five activities will help your family ‘Continue the Conversation” that we began at L.I.G.H.T. This is a key component to the model of Faith Formation that we use and will help to provide your students with a strong faith foundation from which they will be able to draw on for the rest of their lives.
During our January Gathering, we explored Brokenness in the world around us, we looked at how we are called to heal and forgive in the way of Jesus who we call ‘Comforter.’ We recited the Prayer of St. Francis together during our prayer time and I hope it did for you what it did for me; made me think, and helped me remember what I am called to do. This prayer provides us with very tangible, easy to understand ways that we can bring healing to the world around us. Very simply explained….
The first part tells us what we can do: Love, instead of hate. Forgive. Share faith with those who doubt. Be hope to those who despair. When things get dark, help to shine Jesus’ light. Where you see sadness, seek to bring joy.
The second part of the prayer reminds us that it’s not all about us: It reminds us to not look to be comforted, but instead to comfort. To understand, instead of trying to always make ourselves understood. Share your love, and trust that you will receive love in return. When we give, that is when we REALLY receive. It is when we forgive, that we can truly feel forgiveness. And finally it reminds us that we cannot have eternal life until we die to self. That statement leaves us a lot to ponder.
Simple, yes. Easy, no. The ideals of the Peace Prayer cannot be accomplished overnight, they will be a work in progress over each of our lifetimes. But if we learn the prayer, if we keep it close to our hearts, we’ll start to live it – one step at a time. And then, guess what?? We’ll be following in the footsteps of Jesus the Comforter. And as we all know – His Way is The Way!

Have a great day everyone!
