Hi LIGHT Friends & Family,
I was gently reminded by a lovely E-Thought Fan that it has been quite some time since I have sent a message to our extended LIGHT friends & family. I've been so focused on the busy-ness of LIGHT business, that I have indeed neglected this important tool to keep us all connected as we explore the topic of Jesus' Justice together this year. So here is an update and an exciting reveal about our big finish this LIGHT season!
First of all, it has certainly been a very busy time. LIGHT family and friends worked together over an 8-week period to make 160 dresses and 150 pairs of shorts for the children of Pinares Village in Honduras. It was an incredible effort that found a core group of talented sewers being joined by various fabric and thread novices to work toward an end goal of providing a new outfit for every child in the village. We spent many Sunday afternoons together. LIGHT teens and some moms learned to sew. LIGHT kids learned to pin and iron. Others came to help cut, organize, and sort. Some provided funds, some hospitality, some equipment... It was a group effort that was a true reflection of how the Body of Christ operates. We all have gifts and abilities which we used in conjunction with one another during January and February to meet a common goal. In the end, we served 300 children and brought smiles to their faces and those of their families half a world away.
Michelle not only spear-headed this huge project, but she also delivered the clothing when she participated in a Medical and Dental brigade. This team of doctors, dentists, and support staff spent a week tending to the many needs of these villagers in Honduras. Michelle personally helped to extract teeth and bring comfort while she coaxed smiles with her own. She blew bubbles and played games. She saw the sun set on a village in much need and brought home to us the realization that though we live under the same sun, we are very lucky in comparison to those who she met. But beyond this disparity of wealth, we are bound together with these villagers as members of the Family of God. We connected this winter, and maybe we will again. But in the meantime, we must focus on other ways that we can make a difference. How we can use our gifts and talents to serve, as we are called to do.
To that end, I will be asking our LIGHT families to complete a survey during the month of March. This survey will reveal other ways that we are living out Jesus' kind of justice in our communities. I will compile our results and as we gather for the final time this LIGHT season, we will be able to visualize the difference that we have made, the impact that we have had, as members of the Body of Christ.
I expect the reality of all that you do to be quite powerful. Just as an example: our extended LIGHT family/friends during this past year have Walked for Alzheimers, Swam for the Bay, Biked for Cancer, Served at Food Shelters, Baked for the McAuley House, and Marched in a Life Rally. Imagine how many people were helped with these few examples alone. Imagine how many were touched and how many lives were changed. And I did not even begin to share all that our LIGHT families have told me that they have done this year to serve others. I'll save that for April! Be on the lookout for this survey!
In the meantime, enjoy Fat Tuesday - our last hoorah before we enter into the Lenten season of repentance and renewal. Here is a link to a quick two minute refresher on Ash Wednesday and Lent! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3L3c23MfC0.
For those of us at St Catherine's, Ash Wednesday services are at 9am and 6pm.
I will see our Tuesday night friends tomorrow at 5:30p!
Have a great week everyone!
